What is Qigong?
A General Description of Qigong
Qigong is an ancient Chinese Practice which consists of a variety of “still” as well as “moving” meditative methods. Simple and gentle movements and exercises, combined with visualization, direct the flow of “life force energy” or Qi (Chi) into and through the body. “Qi” literally means energy or vital life force and “Gong” means work, method or practice.
This practice is based upon the Chinese philosophy that a powerful energy system (Qi/Chi) exists within the body and flows through energy pathways referred to as meridians and channels. Vital life energy is conveyed to every cell, organ, muscle, and bodily system via these meridians. If the chi patterns are disrupted by physical or mental stress, emotional distress, environmental exposures or a variety of other factors, a person becomes susceptible to disease. Health is restored when this disruption of energy or “Qi” is restored.
Qigong is one way to restore this balance in the body. It is a self-healing practice that enhances health, promotes relaxation, calms the mind, and increases well-being. It is widely used in China as a form of preventative medicine, as well as a form of treatment for many diseases and conditions.
The two different styles Lotus Qigong offers are Zhineng Qigong, one of the most popular forms of Qigong practiced in China and by thousands of people around the world, and Neiyang Gong Qigong, a form of Medical Qigong taught primarily at the famed Hebei Medical Qigong School and Hospital in Beidaihe, China. This school has groups coming from the USA, the UK, Japan, Sweden, France and Germany every year and it’s teachers travel internationally offering Qigong and Taijiquan training.
